Must read

Guwahati, May 7: Nearly 3,000 dual voters from villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Assam’s Kamrup district exercised their voting rights in today’s Guwahati Lok Sabha poll.

These voters, residing in villages such as Shalcher Patgaon, Longsai, Ranibari, Bilpara, and Bhalakhawa, cast their ballots in the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya on April 19, during the first phase of LS election.

However, in the third phase of elections held today, the same voters cast their vote in the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency in Assam.

During Assembly elections, they vote in the Jirang Assembly constituency in Meghalaya and West Guwahati in Assam.

Administratively, these villages fall under the jurisdiction of the Palasbari Revenue Circle in Assam’s Kamrup district and the Patharkama Police Station in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district.

While the issue of “dual voting” is prevalent in several villages along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border, the situation varies from one area to another. In the Langpih region, historical conflicts between the two states have led residents to conceal their “dual voter” identity.

However, in the peaceful villages of Ranibari, Bhalakhawa, etc., locals openly exercise their voting rights in both states without facing such challenges, showcasing a higher level of harmony despite the ongoing border dispute.
