DIBRUGARH, Apr 7: Flood and erosion in Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency is a major issue among the voters when they cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
India bloc candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi has been raising the issue in all his election campaigns.
The opposition parties during their election rallies have vehemently attacked the ruling BJP for not taking any step to solve the flood and erosion problem.
The flood and erosion in Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency will play a major role in the poll plank this year. The voters will caste their vote keeping in mind to a solution to the problem and toward the steps taken to solve the issue.
The Flood and erosion will be the major poll issue this Lok Sabha election. Scientific solution is need of the hour to solve the flood and erosion problem in Dibrugarh. The Dibrugarh town has been facing the wrath of erosion for last several decades. The residents of the town are very much serious about the issue,” said Rajiv Dutta, a resident of Dibrugarh.
He further added, “The Brahmaputra bed now lies several feet higher than the ground level of Dibrugarh town. Most of the time, the Brahmaputra flows much higher than the ground level. The DTP dyke is the only barrier. If the erosion will again happen then it can affect the dyke and the people of Dibrugarh town will face a huge problem,”.
The citizens of Dibrugarh have urged the government to take scientific and permanent steps to solve the decade old problem of the town.
Recently, in a bid to shield Dibrugarh town from the perennial threat of flood and erosion by Brahmaputra, a Rs 75-crore project was launched. The project was undertaken by the Nabard Infrastructure Development Assistance (NIDA). The project involves the construction of riverbank protection along a 7km stretch using innovative technology.
Naren Khound, a senior citizen said, “Funds were alloted but the project should be implemented properly. It has been seen that earlier many projects were taken but not properly implemented. This time we will vote for the candidate who will seriously take measures to solve flood and erosion,”.
Dibrugarh town has been facing the threat of soil erosion for the last several decades but no permanent solution has been taken so far. Due to constant erosion, the oldest town of Assam has been facing the threat to being wiped out.
According to experts, the river course of the Brahmaputra changed suddenly which is one of the reson of the massive erosion.
The earthquake of August 15, 1950, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, altered the course of the Brahamaputra and lifted the bed level of the river in Dibrugarh by several meters.
Dibrugarh has been facing the challenge of soil erosion due to change in course of the Brahmaputra in the upper stream. Earlier, the river current used to hit Dibrugarh’s Rohmoria area but now it directly hits the town. In 2020, due to massive erosion, six houses were washed away in the Mohanaghat area.
Maijan, Nagaguli, Mohanaghat, Dibrugarh town are worst affected in erosion and so far huge swatches of land were globbed up by the Brahmaputra river.
Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat have a total of 16,50, 706 voters who will caste their valuable vote to decide the fate of the candidate on April 19.
