Pankaj Udhas, renowned ghazal and playback singer, dies due to prolonged illness at 72

Shillong, Feb 26: Ghazal mastreo Pankaj Udhas and Padma Shri recipient breathed his last around 11 am on Monday in the Breach Candy hospital.

He died following prolonged illness. The last rites will be held on Tuesday, as informed by the grief-stricken family.

Best known for “Chitthi Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein”, Udhas, who also made a mark as a playback singer in many Hindi films, including “Naam”, “Saajan” and “Mohra”.

In the official note, Veteran ghazal singer’s daughter Nayaab shared a statement on Instagram. “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness,” the official statement read.

The Udhas family, which hails from Rajkot in Gujarat. Udhas was trained under the tutelage of Navrang Nagpurkar, a singer from the Gwalior Gharana.
