Phidalia Toi to resign as MSCW chairperson, hits back at Paul Lyngdoh for “abuse of power”

Must read

Shillong, June 23: Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) Phidalia Toi on Friday decided to resign from the post even as she termed the action of the Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh as an “abuse of power”.

“I came to know about my removal from the press only and after two press statements I got a show cause notice from the government. After that clarification from the Board, he (Paul) is still adamant to give that press statement which is incorrect,” Toi told reporters.

Toi informed that she has also submitted her reply to the show cause notice.

She also announced her decision to quit as the MSCW chief and said, “Today I had sent my response to the show cause notice and after sometime I will also tender my resignation.”

“I don’t want to work in a toxic atmosphere as this friction will only bring an unconducive environment and I think it is good for me to go for the progress of the MSCW and for the interest of the women community I have to resign but I will take a decision on what to do after my consultation with my lawyers,” Toi added.

Terming the action of the minister as an “abuse of power”, the MSCW chairperson said, “Looking at what the minister had done I think this is an abuse of power and I take it as a discrimination, gender bias and character assassination so I will see what to do next.”

The social welfare minister had recently maintained that his order to remove the incumbent chairperson Phidalia Toi was not done on “hearsay” and that he preferred to be right than popular on this issue.

He was countering the statement of the MSCW, which had termed the removal of the chairperson as “whimsical” and that the minister concerned had received inaccurate information that stated the chairperson had been absent from 3 out of 4 meetings of the Commission.
