Dibrugarh, June 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, led the global celebration of the 10th International Yoga Day in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, by adorning an Assamese Gamosa, once again putting the state’s iconic symbol on the global stage.
The “Gamosa” or “Gamocha” is a handwoven rectangular cotton piece of cloth with red borders and different designs and motifs. It is traditionally offered to elders and guests as a mark of respect and honor by the Assamese people. It is an integral part of all socio-religious ceremonies in the state and is considered as an Assamese identity and pride.
PM Modi’s gesture has drawn praise from Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other Assamese leaders, who expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s continued appreciation of this iconic symbol of Assam.
Highlighting the repeated affection shown by the PM towards the Gamosa, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal posted on X, “Associated with this beloved Gamosa is the spiritual devotion and solidarity of the devout masses of Krishnaguru Sevashram. On behalf of the people of Assam as well as the devotees of Krishnaguru Sevashram, I express my deep gratitude to Modi ji for once again showing his love and affection for the Gamosa.”

Apart from Sonowal, who is also a former Chief Minister of Assam, present Chief Minister of the State Himanta Biswa Sarma has also praised PM Modi many times for respecting the pride of Assam. Recently, he made a remark that ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi donned the Asomiya Gamocha, its use has become widespread throughout the country.
The Gamocha that Modi wore on Friday is also associated with ‘The Krishnaguru Sewashram’, a 500-year-old Vaishnavite monastery in Nasatra, Assam. Sonowal is also a disciple of Krishnaguru Sewashram. The Krishnaguru Sewashram aims to establish a spiritually oriented society free from superstitions and discrimination. The disciples of Krishnaguru wear Gamocha in the same pattern and motif worn by PM Modi on the Yoga Day celebration.
