Meghalaya marks 10th International Yoga Day with yoga sessions in schools, military bases

Shillong, June 21: Along with the rest of the world, Meghalaya celebrated the 10th International Yoga Day (IYD) with Yoga sessions at various schools along with security forces like BSF and IAF holding sessions at their bases in the State.

The day was observed by BSF Shillong as well as by the Army Public School, Shillong. Around 700 students in two batches participated in the Yoga program at Army Public School, while around 100 soldiers and officers of BSF participated in the programme. The programme was conducted in collaboration with Art of Living, Shillong Chapter, where the Yoga instructor Panchali Bhattacharjee and assistant Amalendu Paul conducted guided yoga sessions.

Along with the rest of the world, Meghalaya celebrated the 10th International Yoga Day (IYD) with Yoga sessions at various schools along with security forces like BSF and IAF holding sessions at their bases in the State.

In addition, Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya also observed the day at its various headquarters and Border outposts along the Indo- Bangladesh Border. DIG/PSO, BSF Meghalaya, Anand Singh Takshak, inaugurated the yoga session at BSF camp Umpling, Shillong in which all ranks participated enthusiastically. Following the theme of Yoga day, family members of BSF also participated in a yoga session to promote holistic health and wellness, reinforcing the Importance of Yoga in daily life. Prior to Yoga day, BSF Meghalaya left no avenue unexplored to spread awareness on benefits of yoga in its nearby civil areas by carrying out rallies, displaying banners etc.

Similarly, HQ Eastern Air Command (EAC) of Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated the day by organizing a mass yoga session for all its Air Warriors and their families. Officers, Airmen and their families enthusiastically participated in the Yoga session. The event commenced with the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) which included an introductory motivational talk on importance of health benefits of practicing yoga, followed by a refreshing yoga session.

The event was celebrated with fervor by all the Stations and Units under EAC by organizing Mass Yoga Sessions at their bases. Air Warriors and their families of all the Stations participated in large numbers and performed Yogasanas. Special emphasis was laid on encouraging the participants to pursue Yoga for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and conscious use of eco-friendly products.

A similar programme was organised by Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong and PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Happy Valley, Shillong to mark the day at the school premises with demonstration of Common Yoga Protocol. More than 1000 students of the school participated in the celebration, which started at 8 AM in the morning. Students of all classes of the school enthusiastically participated in the Common Yoga Protocol practice that was demonstrated by Yoga Trainer, Usha Ghosh, from Meghalaya Yoga Samiti.

Principal of KV Happy Valley, D B Singh, while addressing the students said that Yoga has become the best way for physical and mental fitness and has been accepted as the best way to embrace positivity in life worldwide. Exhorting the students to take up Yoga in daily life regularly, Singh said that Yoga helps in connecting the body with mind and sharpens our intellectual abilities. Inter-House quiz competition, drawing and painting competition and debate competitions were organised among the students of the school as part of the two-day celebrations.

Central Bureau of Commission is also organising programmes across the country to promote Yoga among all.

CBC’s Field Office in Nongstoin also observed the International Yoga Day, 2024 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills District. Riba Jana demonstrated Surya Namaskar. Archana Upadhyay, PT teacher of JNV Nongstoin led the demonstration with students enthusiastically participating in the celebrations. The main focus of the programme was to remind the masses about the benefits of Practicing Yoga in Daily Life. Dancing and Singing Competition were held and prizes were also distributed to the winners.

The initiative for “Yoga Day” was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2014 UN address and the related resolution received broad global support, with 177 nations co-sponsoring it in the United Nations General Assembly, where it passed unanimously. Subsequently, the first International Yoga Day was celebrated successfully on June 21, 2015, across the world including New York, Paris, Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and New Delhi.
