Shillong, Oct 26: In another clamp down on criminal elements operating in the State, Meghalaya police on Thursday busted an extortion racket operating in the city.
Following inputs received of extortion in commercial centers at Police Bazar and Iewduh, the Special Cell of East Khasi Hills Police laid a trap and arrested 4 persons from Police Bazar who were caught serving extortion notes to one of the shops on Thursday.
“In this regard a Suo-Moto case has been registered at Sadar Police Station for extortion against the four arrested persons,” informed Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (City), East Khasi Hills, Shillong.
Police also recovered incriminating documents from the possession of the arrested persons.
These include:
1. Three numbers of extortion letters of Hynniewtrep People Defense Alliance (HPDA).
2. Three numbers of extortion receipt books of Hynniewtrep People Defense Alliance (HPDA).
3. Two Donation receipt slips of United Khasi Movement (UKM).
4. Two Donation receipt slips of Federation of Khasi United People (FKUP).
5. Two Donation receipt slips of Confederation of Meghalaya People (CMP).
6. One counterfoil receipt slips of Khun Hynniewtrep Youth Council (KHYC).
7. Two donation receipt slips of Hynniewtrep Youth Regions (HYR).
8. One Scooty Aprilla ML05 Q 9828.
9. Four nos of Mobile Phones.
Syiem said interrogation is on to ascertain outlets/establishments where extortions notes have been served for registering more cases against the culprits and to nab other persons/groups who are involved in the extortion racket in the city.
“Some of the accused also have criminal records and were earlier arrested,” he said and urged the public and business establishments to give information to police so as to nab such extortionists and for taking legal action.
