Polluted Ganol River: WGH admin imposes fine on Rongram Bazaar Committee, to begin clean-up

Must read

Tura, June 22: Following the discovery of huge quantity of garbage and waste being dumped into the Ganol River, which has made its way to the important Ganol Hydroelectric project, the West Garo Hills (WGH) administration has taken steps to ensure the river is cleaned and rejuvenated, and the operation of the hydel project remains unaffected by the waste.

After convening a meeting on Thursday, the West Garo Hill District Administration has decided to levy a fine of Rs 1 Lakh on Rongram Bazaar Committee, as the committee has failed to ensure that the waste does not get dumped into the river and affect the ecosystem. The fine amount will be utilised for improving cleanliness of the market.

A provision of funds will be made for creating a small dumping ground/space for throwing garbage in the area.

The decision comes after media reports surfaced to highlight the huge quantity of trash and waste chocking the riverbanks and spilling into the water from the Rongram market. As the river flows down from the market, the pollution also gets swept along with it straight into the massive Ganol hydroelectric project.

After personally inspecting the area, the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chelani, has instructed the Ganol project staff to ensure cleanup of the dam in coordination with other parties.

The cleanup will start from Friday morning with people from the project, TMB, Rongram Bazaar Committee and social organisation coming together for the task.

The SDRF team will supervise the operation to avert any untoward incidents and ensure safety of the cleanup crew.

Also, awareness sessions will be conducted for all the members of the Bazaar area to avoid similar future situations.
