NESO to hold candlelight vigil across NE for peace in Manipur

Must read

Shillong, June 22: The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) will hold a candlelight vigil in all state capitals of the region on June 28, to appeal for peace to prevail in the violence-hit Manipur even as it asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on the matter.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NESO said it will hold a candlelight vigil in all state capitals on June 28, appealing all to shun violence so that peace and tranquillity will once again prevail in Manipur.

The NESO also expressed its deep sense of sorrow at the on-going incidents of violence and arson in Manipur which is still continuing resulting in the loss of precious lives and destruction to properties.

It also expressed its solidarity with the suffering of Manipur and called for peace to prevail and immediate cessation of all sorts of violence and vandalism in this highly volatile situation.

NESO appealed to all the citizens of Manipur not to believe and spread false news, misinformation or false propaganda which will only worsen the present situation.

Further, the NESO has squarely blamed both the state and the central governments for their utter failure in controlling and stopping violence even after more than 45 days of conflict in spite of the visit of the Union Home Minister and the presence of the additional armed forces in Manipur numbering more than 40,000 personnel.

“NESO expresses its shock and surprise at the Prime Minister for maintaining a stoic silence till date on the happenings in Manipur. His total silence will only further alienate the indigenous peoples of the North East,” the statement said.

It further added, “The NESO urged upon the PM to speak up lest the Government of India has a hidden agenda behind this inaction.”
