Guwahati, Dec 11: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to Manipur’s peace, development, and inclusive growth while addressing a civic reception in Imphal during her two-day visit to the state.

In a speech marked by reassurance and optimism, the President said she was “deeply touched” by the warmth of the people of Manipur and praised the state’s legacy of courage, cultural richness and extraordinary resilience.

During the day, President Murmu inaugurated a series of major projects across sectors such as tribal development, agriculture, infrastructure, electricity, drinking water, education, healthcare, sports, and tourism. These initiatives, she said, are aimed at improving connectivity, generating employment, empowering women, and accelerating economic activity.

“These projects reflect the Government’s commitment to inclusive development and empowerment of the people of Manipur,” she stated.

In a significant message of solidarity, the President addressed the suffering caused by recent violence in the state.

“I want to assure you that taking care of the concerns of the people of Manipur is the highest priority for us. My government stands with every affected family,” she said, adding that the Union Government remains committed to restoring harmony, ensuring security, and supporting the state’s progress.

She noted that Manipur’s developmental momentum in recent years has been possible due to close cooperation between the Centre and the state as well as the hard work of the people.

Calling Manipur the gateway to India’s Act East Policy, President Murmu highlighted the state’s strategic importance, youthful population and immense natural beauty.

“Manipur has unlimited potential,” she remarked, underlining its growing connection with Southeast Asia and its cultural and economic prospects.

The President also highlighted the contributions of Manipuri women, referring to her recent meeting with women artisans at the National Handicrafts Awards Ceremony and paying tribute to the iconic Nupi Lal movement.

Speaking of Manipur’s ecological wealth, President Murmu praised Loktak Lake — the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and home to the world’s only floating national park — as a natural treasure.

She also celebrated Manipur’s sporting excellence, noting that the state is the birthplace of modern polo. Earlier in the day, she witnessed a women’s polo exhibition match and lauded the players’ skill and determination.

Urging citizens to uphold peace and harmony, President Murmu said,

“Let us strengthen Manipur as a State where every child feels safe, every woman feels empowered, every community feels included, and every citizen moves ahead towards a brighter future.”

Murmu also met and interacted with a few Internally Displaced Persons in Imphal. She assured that the Government stands with them at all times to address their needs. She affirmed that the Government is working to secure their homes, livelihoods, and the future of their children. She further assured them that the Government of India is taking necessary measures to facilitate their progress towards an environment of peace and sustained prosperity. She also impressed upon them the need to strengthen harmony.
