Tura, Jan 15: President of India Draupadi Murmu officially launched the 5th Meghalaya Games on Monday evening at the iconic PA Sangma Stadium in Tura. But, in the process of the inaugurating the mega sporting event, she did something unprecedented leaving everyone present in surprise.

After having finished her official speech, President Murmu had just taken her seat. The emcee announced the games open and the tricolour balloons were released into the evening sky. While everyone was watching the balloons soar high into the sky, suddenly the emcee was calling for a mic to be turned on. Everyone was taken by surprise at this sudden turn of events and realised that the President was once again back at the podium.

During the launch of the games, she had learnt about the cultural troupes and the athletes on the open-air ground of the stadium being there for 3-4 hours for her arrival. Despite the chilly winter evening, many of the cultural troupes were without any warm clothes due to their traditional attire, some even without shirt while the contingents of athletes were in basic gear. But none had complained of the cold or the delay, remaining at their designated places till the programme got over.

Realising this, President Murmu went back to the podium to thank the boys and girls representing the 3 tribes of the state for standing in the cold winter evening for 3-4 hours to perform their cultural dances for the inauguration ceremony. She called this ‘sportsman spirit’, young star and young blood and young mind.

What President Murmu did was unprecedented since the speech, timing and movement during the presidential programme are extremely tight. This also showcased the compassionate side of the President, the first tribal President of the country.

Although this may have been a small gesture on her part but this has won the hearts of thousands in the North East region, which predominantly has tribal population.
