President Droupadi Murmu honours late PA Sangma with floral tribute

Tura, Jan 15: President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tribute to PA Sangma on Monday in Tura, the former Lok Sabha Speaker and father of Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.

She was accompanied by Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Tura MP Agatha Sangma, former Home Minister James Sangma, and CM Conrad Sangma’s mother, Soradini K Sangma.

President Murmu landed at Baljek Airport in Jengjal, West Garo Hills, on Monday afternoon for the inauguration of the fifth edition of the Meghalaya Games 2024.

The president was welcomed by Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, among other officials.

The president’s visit is also very significant, as she belongs to a tribal community. She will also be the first President of India to stay overnight in Tura.

This is the first time in fifty years that the Meghalaya Games are being held in Tura, West Garo Hills District.

Earlier, CM Sangma had called her visit “a very big thing, especially for the Tura people and the people of the region.”

He was not only the CM of the state, but he was also the first Lok Sabha speaker of India.
