Shillong, Feb 21: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday expressed his condolences and conveyed his deep sympathies on the sudden demise of former Home Minister and UDP candidate from Sohiong, HDR Lyngdoh, who died on Monday afternoon due to cardiac arrest.

“With heavy heart I would like to send the condolences to the family members of Late HDR Lyngdoh who passed away last night. So, from the party we send the deepest condolences to his family and people of Sohiong constituency,” said the Deputy CM.

HDR Lyngdoh was fondly known as maheh and had been part and parcel of the government of Meghalaya for many years. He was set to contest again in this upcoming election after a gap of 5 years. He was considered a strong contender, and his sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the local political scene.

HDR Lyngdoh first won the MLA elections in the year 1988 from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and continued till 1998. In 1998 MLA elections, he was defeated by RA Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

In 1999, he was elected as the MDC from Sohiong-Nongspung Constituency from the Indian National Congress (INC) party. He again took over as an MLA in the 2003 MLA elections and retained the Sohiong seat for 15 years till 2018. He lost the 2018 MLA elections to Samlin Malngiang of HSPDP.

As a result of Lyngdoh’s untimely death, the election commission has decided to postpone the election in the constituency. However, election to the 59 remaining constituencies in the State will continue as scheduled on February 27.
