Protests take place in Tura against non-tribal participation in GHADC

Must read

Tura, March 12: Protesting student and social organizations from across Garo Hills swarmed Tura to stage a rally opposing the participation by non-tribals in the upcoming GHADC elections which are due to take place on April 12th.

The protestors had initially planned to stage a sit-in dharna outside the DC office in Tura but following the denial of permission by the district administration, they shifted their movement to the William point outside the GHADC office area.

A combined group of organizations under the banner of the All Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (AGHJAC) and the East Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (EGHJAC) landed in Tura carrying red protest flags and banners decrying the decision to allow non-tribals to contest the upcoming polls.

The protestors marched through the streets of Tura and raised slogans outside the gates of the DC office which were kept shut with a strong police presence. They demanded that parties that allotted tickets to non-tribal candidates should revoke their decision to field them. They also demanded that the election process of filing nominations be put on hold.

The agitating groups have announced that their protest will continue on Friday and on to Monday, the last day for nominations, during which a poster campaign would also be carried out opposing non-tribal participation.
