Rahul Gandhi calls for urgent action on Assam floods

Must read

Guwahati, July 08: Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has voiced his anguish over large-scale losses due to floods in Assam.

“The extreme devastation caused by flooding in Assam is heartbreaking,” Gandhi remarked. “Innocent children like Avinash are being taken away from us” Rahul said who was in Silchar before going to Manipur on a day’s visit.

Eight-year-old Avinash Sarkar fell into an open drain in the Jyotinagar area of Guwahati and was swept away by floodwaters.

The numbers presented by Assam Congress leaders paint a grim picture: over 60 lives lost, more than 53,000 people displaced, and approximately 2.4 million affected by the flooding. These statistics, Rahul Gandhi reflects the gross mismanagement by the BJP’s double-engine government, which had once come to power with the promise of a “flood-free Assam.”

Gandhi has called for immediate relief, rehabilitation, and compensation for the affected communities. He also advocated for the establishment of a pan-Northeast water management authority, emphasizing the necessity of long-term solutions to prevent future flooding.

“Assam needs a comprehensive and compassionate vision,” Gandhi asserted, underscoring the urgency of the situation. “Proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and a pan-Northeast water management authority to do everything necessary to control floods in the long term.”
