Shillong, Jan 10: Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday said that the government is inviting all religious leaders to the inauguration of the first Captain Williamson Sangma State University on January 13, for seeking their blessings.

This came after his recent statement that the government will organize a massive Christian prayer service to operationalise the first state university.

Sangma however categorically denied having made such a statement and said, “I have not said so but only wordings and sentences have been put by some press but it is not so…”

“But yes, definitely all the religious leaders will be invited (to the inauguration of the state university) and we are seeking their blessings,” he told reporters.

Stating that there is nothing wrong in seeking blessings for the institution, the people, the state and the country, Sangma said, “That should not be the issue but I don’t know how it (controversy) happened…but it is a government official function where everybody will be invited including church and other religious leaders. Yes as a state, we will seek their blessings and that is all.”

On the other hand, the education minister also termed the establishment of the first state university as one of the major decisions taken by the MDA government under the leadership of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

“The MDA government under the able leadership of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma has focused mostly on the education sector as unless the education sector is transformed nothing is going to happen. Now many things have been done and many things still need to be done in the days to come,” he said while adding “Therefore after 52 years, after knowing the challenges, not only the CUET issue, beyond that, yes under the dynamic leadership of the chief minister, we have decided the state should established its own state university. Therefore, it is a major decision of the MDA government to give best in the education sector as well as employment to the people.”

Further, Sangma said that everything will be borned by the state government since it is a state university and very soon, recruitment will start for 150 posts so that few departments can be started within this academic session.

“This is a state university so it will be borned by the state government. Now, few departments will be started this year. Due to limited classrooms, we may not be able to start in one go but VC’s offices are working out the modalities to start the academic session from this year,” he stated.
