Shillong, June 26: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday warned that any change in the state reservation policy (SRP) would lead to serious legal scrutiny.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said there is need to wait for the suggestions and recommendations of the Expert Committee constituted by the State government on the state reservation policy.
“…in view of the clear constitutional provision and in view of the Supreme Court judgement about the ceiling of 50% reservation for any state, I think that any changes (made to the SRP) may have a serious legal scrutiny in the eyes of law. Therefore, let’s wait for what the expert committee suggests to us. But if anything happens it will be a great loss for indigenous people of our state,” he said.
“Supposed the constitutional provision and Supreme Court judgment are to be applied tomorrow on the ceiling of 50% reservation, it will be a great loss of indigenous people of the state. Having said so, let’s wait for the expert committee to suggest to the state government and accordingly will see what the outcome will be,” Sangma added.
Asked, the NPP leader admitted that the issue of reservation policy is one of the main reasons behind the party’s debacle from Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections.
“Yes to some extent as many have misunderstood and some political parties have misinterpreted the issue… I am making a very serious statement. This reservation policy was framed nine to ten days before inauguration of the Meghalaya as a full-fledged state on January 12, 1972. Because of certain challenges, the rise of unemployment, this is going to be a crisis not only for the state but for across the world. Unemployment issues are happening across the world not only for Meghalaya or India but all over the world,” he said.
