Nongpoh, May 13: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ri Bhoi District, Arpit Uphadhyaya, informed on Monday that inquiries have been initiated to check illegal earth cutting taking place from the down site of Byrnihat to the Khanapara area.
This action follows multiple complaints lodged by various parties regarding illegal earth cutting, which has caused massive destruction of hills in the district.
Speaking to reporters, Ri Bhoi DC Arpit Uphadhyaya stated that the District Administration has received several complaints regarding illegal hill destruction through earth cutting by certain individuals. The administration has taken this matter seriously, as it has adversely affected the environment and polluted the atmosphere.
He also mentioned that a Magistrate has been appointed to take important measures to investigate the issue, and a special committee has been set up. Additionally, information and details have been requested from the Divisional Forest Officer of the Territorial Forest Department. Uphadhyaya added that formal reports will be submitted soon.
