Riyan Parag makes history as first male cricketer from northeastern in Indian national team

Guwahati, June 24: Cricket enthusiasts from the northeast have an extra reason to celebrate as Riyan Parag, a native of Guwahati, has been selected for the upcoming T20 International Series in Zimbabwe. The series is scheduled to begin on July 6, 2024.

With this achievement, Riyan Parag becomes the first male cricketer from the Northeast to be selected for the national team.

This was disclosed by the BCCI in an official announcement on Monday when it announced the T20 squad for the Zimbabwe T20I series.

Riyan Parag, a native of Guwahati, is an all-rounder who plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Riyan has earned his maiden India cap after an impressive season in the IPL 2024.

BCCI posted on X, “The Men’s Selection Committee has picked a 15-member squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. India will visit Harare in the first week of July to participate in a 5-match T20I series against the hosts.”

It stated that Shubnam Gill would lead the Indian squad as the Captain. The other 14 players are Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande.

Mentionably, Uma Chetry was the first female cricketer from the region to be inducted in India’s national squad.
