Road to nowhere: Residents flag PMGSY delay between Ampati–Purakhasia

Must read

Ampati, May 5: Public concern is mounting in South West Garo Hills as residents of Ampati and Purakhasia allege prolonged delays in the construction of a PMGSY road linking the two areas. The issue has now been formally raised by the A·CHIK State Peoples’ Front, which has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner seeking urgent intervention.

According to the complaint, the condition of the partially built road has deteriorated sharply with the onset of rains. Instead of easing connectivity, several stretches have turned muddy and slippery, posing risks to both vehicles and pedestrians. Daily commuters, including students and office-goers, are finding it increasingly difficult to use the route safely.

A key concern is the ongoing work at the Chepagri bridge. Residents allege that the absence of a temporary diversion or alternative crossing has made the situation hazardous, particularly during heavy rainfall when river currents intensify. With no safe passage in place, many are forced to take risks to continue their daily routines.

The road is crucial for the local economy, especially for farmers who rely on it to transport produce to markets. Its link to Ampati, the district headquarters, makes it vital for access to essential services, trade, and mobility. However, locals claim that construction has remained stalled for months, with little visible progress on the ground.

Terming it a matter of public safety and livelihood, the organisation has urged the district administration to resume and expedite construction work. It has also called for immediate measures to ensure safe passage during the ongoing monsoon season.

As frustration grows, residents hope authorities will act swiftly to prevent the long-delayed project from turning into a prolonged public hardship.
