Santa Shylla visits Langtor village following tragic death of mother & infant

Shillong, April 15: In the wake of the recent tragic incident that claimed the lives of a young mother and her infant, the Chairperson of the Committee on Empowerment of Women, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Santa Mary Shylla, visited Langtor village in Eastern West Khasi Hills District on Tuesday.

The visit was part of a compassionate outreach to offer condolences to the family and relatives of (Late) Darisha Lyngdoh, whose body, along with that of her two-month-old child, was found at a water collection site in Kynshi village, Langtor, on March 2, 2025. The two had been reported missing since March 1.

Shylla, accompanied by fellow committee members, visited the site where the bodies were discovered. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the deceased. The delegation later proceeded to Mairang Police Station, where they met with Additional Superintendent of Police, P. Suchiang, and the Officer-in-Charge to assess the progress of the ongoing investigation.

Joining the Chairperson were Committee members Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah, Adelbert Nongrum, and Brightstarwell Marbaniang. Also present during the visit were the Deputy Commissioner of Eastern West Khasi Hills, Anita Kharpor, police officials, the Sordar of Langtor village, and members of the local community.

The incident has deeply shaken the region, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protective measures for women and children, especially in rural areas.

Notably, the family members of the deceased had earlier expressed strong doubts over the nature of Darisha’s death, rejecting the possibility of suicide or accidental drowning. They firmly believe that she and her infant were victims of foul play. The family has called on the authorities to ensure a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation, and to take swift action to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
