Shillong, Jan 4: Opposition Congress legislator from Mawlai, PT Sawkmie, on Tuesday asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to invite the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union (MEMRIWU) for talks with regards to their pending demands.

“I urge the government to call (them) for talks and fulfill the demands of the staffs of EMRI,” Sawkmie said in a statement.

He said it is very unfortunate that the EMRI workers had to call for a cease work strike. “It reflects that the government is not serious and is not listening to the demands of the association,” the MLA added.

The EMRI workers have been demanding the state government for immediate cancellation of the contract with the GVK EMRI and assure job security to them.

Workers of the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (GVK EMRI) had called for a one-week strike from Monday midnight as a mark of protest against the state government’s failure to comply with their demands.

Announcing this, President of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union (MEMRIWU) Microlina Syiemlieh had stated that the decision was taken after the two weeks ultimatum given to the state government to invite the workers for discussion, has expired.

“Till date there has been no response from the state government. Hence, we have decided to call for a one week strike by stopping all forms of services,” she said.
