Dibrugarh, Mar 3: The Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh Police launched a massive operation against militants after getting a specific input about the presence of a heavily armed group of Ulfa (I) cadres inside the Manabhum reserve forest, spanning across Namsai and Changlang districts of eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
Namsai Superintendent of police Sange Thinley said that the forces had blocked the entry and exit routes to the reserve forest so that the militants cannot escape.
Sources said that the group had entered Arunachal Pradesh from its base in Myanmar with an intent of carrying out subversive activities as well extortion.
Atleast 8 individuals in the Chowkham area were served extortion notes by the Ulfa (I) directing them to pay specific amount of money ranging from 15 lakhs to 1 crore.
Sources said that another intent of the Ulfa group was to collect their share, which they claim from illegal poppy cultivation.
