The incident happened on April 13, when approximately 300 people gathered at Berenga village in Cachar district and began marching toward Silchar town to protest against the amended Waqf Act. As the crowd moved forward, police intervened and attempted to stop the procession. A mild lathi charge was carried out to disperse the group, after which the crowd scattered.
