Shillong, Oct 15: The auspicious festival of Shardiya Navratri has commenced. The nine-day festival began on Sunday and will end on October 24.
On this occasion, Maa Durga and her nine avatars, known as Navadurga, are worshipped.
Navratri, or Durga Puja, is one of the most anticipated Hindu festivals.
It falls in autumn, in the lunar month of Ashwin.
Devotees commemorate Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura during this time.
On the first day of Shardiya Navratri, devotees worship Maa Shailputri.
Who is Maa Shailputri?
Maa Shailputri is one of the nine forms of Maa Durga, who is worshipped on the first day during the nine days of Navratri. She is believed to be the provider of prosperity. She is hailed as the mother of nature. She governs the Moon, and she is the provider of all fortunes.
According to Drik Panchang, after her self-immolation, Goddess Parvati was born as Lord Himalaya’s daughter and was known as Shailputri.
In Sanskrit, the name Shailputri means: Shail means the mountain, and putri is the daughter of the mountain.
She has two hands – in right hand, she carries Trishul, and in her left hand, she holds a lotus flower and a mounts a bull. Her colour is white, which denotes purity, innocence, peace and calmness.
