New Delhi, Aug 29: Meghalaya Minister and BJP’s South Shillong legislator, Sanbor Shullai has sought for Centre’s intervention to expedite the peace talks with the banned militant outfit HNLC to ensure peace prevails in the Statw, especially Shillong.
Shullai met Union Joint Secretary of Home Affairs, Piyush Goyal at his North Block office, New Delhi on August 27, 2021, whereby he handed over a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah updating him of the present day situation of Meghalaya.
The letter briefs about the strategic appeal made to the HNLC group banned by the Government of India to give up arms and come mainstream to initiate the peace process. In this regard the group in the past too had expressed their desire for a meaningful dialogue with the Govt of India. The same has been initiated by the MDA government under the leadership of Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma.
However, due to some preconditions laid down by the HNLC, the talks have not materialized.
“In this regard we would like to highlight the central government’s role in bringing several banned organisation for peace dialogue. Thus the BJP Meghalaya and the MDA requests the central government to expedite peace process with HNLC and help to restore complete peace and tranquility in Shillong,” the letter read.
He added that the NDA government at centre has repeatedly assured the people of northeast for a better future, so the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), can play a decisive role in engaging the HNLC in a meaningful dialogue under the purview of the constitutional parameters so as to join mainstream society and be a part of the global and National development process.
