Gangtok, Oct 2: A delegation of the Citizen Action Party (CAP) reached Sikkim Krantikari Morcha Party’s (SKMP) headquarters ‘proposing peace’ on Mahatma Gandhi’s 154th birth anniversary on Monday.
This ‘unique step’ taken by CAP members comes in the wake of an alleged attack on CAP supporters by SKM party workers on September 29.
Vehicles clad with SKM party flags dispersed the CAP supporters, shouting slogans of SKM along with sloganeering against CAP leader Ganesh Rai.
SKM general secretary Pawan Gurung was offering white khadas (scarfs) to other CAP members as a message of peace.
On the other hand, CAP spokesperson Mahesh Rai read out their ‘peace proposal’ in front of SKM members and the media.
On September 29, CAP’s All Sikkim Youth Welfare Council organised a youth meet at Soreng town. But at the very last hour, the venue was changed overnight due to some reasons that we do not wish to make public.
“We had shifted our meeting venue from Soreng town to Dodak Helipad. Many people wishing to join the meet had their vehicles stopped at Soreng town, with one vehicle being damaged by some of the reportedly, elements there. Reportedly, those involved in violence had SKM party flags in their vehicles; they were shouting slogans of the SKM party,” he said.
SKM’s general secretary Pawan Gurung said, “We are also peace loving people and party. When we were in opposition in the past, we have been victim of many such political violence. We do not want such violence. The trend of such political violence began with the 25 years ruling Sikkim Democratic Front party, of which CAP leader Ganesh Rai was part of then. They must understand the kind of attack that happened to us then”.
