Sikkim to host supercar rally from Dec 11 to boost tourism

Must read

Gangtok, Dec 10: Sikkim is set to host a high-profile supercar rally from December 11 to 15, 2025, in a bid to position the Himalayan state as a premier destination for adventure and luxury tourism.

The rally—supported by the Black Cat Division under the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army and the Government of Sikkim—is being organised by the Mumbai-based Supercar Route group, a collective of businessmen, investors, and entrepreneurs known for undertaking high-end road expeditions across India.

While the event will traverse routes from Sukna in West Bengal through Siliguri, Gangtok, Cho La, Nathu La, and the scenic Gnathang–Zuluk stretch, many of these roads remain inaccessible for regular tourist movement. Notably, the long-pending opening of the Chola and Doklam routes continues to be a major concern for locals and stakeholders.

Cho La—where the Indian Army defended the border against China in 1967—is one of the key locations proposed under the Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan initiative, a joint programme of the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Tourism to promote patriotic tourism linked to historic battlefields. Doklam also falls under this initiative, yet both sites remain closed to the public.

Local yak herder Gnathang Gnawang told reporters, “People have purchased mostly second-hand vehicles hoping the route will open so they can transport tourists and offer services.” Many locals, he said, dream of setting up shops or travel services once Doklam is opened, though he believes the road may still be unsuitable for regular use.

Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba said the Central and State governments are committed to opening these areas to showcase their historical significance, particularly India’s successful defence during the 1967 conflict. Tourism in these regions, he said, would both preserve border heritage and generate income for local communities. He added that he will raise the issue in Parliament.

Subba also reiterated the long-standing demand to reopen border trade with China through Nathu La, stating that both governments have shown positive intent.
