Shillong, Sept 8: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma has decided to continue recognizing North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum as member of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislature party citing that since the suspension letter did not specifically address him as the MLA.
“I have received the letter (of suspension). It is a fact that he has been suspended from the party but then technically I cannot accept that because the copy of the suspension letter that was given to me was addressed to Adelbert Nongrum, just simply as Adelbert Nongrum (Jaiaw). There could be so many other Adelbert Nongrums living in that same locality,” Sangma told reporters after the Assembly session on Monday.
Asked, Sangma said, “As I said technically he is still part of the VPP legislature party. He has been suspended and that information has also come to us but that letter of supension does not address him as MLA. He has just been suspended from the party, not from the legislature party. That is what we have interpreted because the suspension letter only addressed to him as Mr Adelbert Nongrum, Jaiaw.
That is why technically he is still a member of the VPP legislature party.”
However, the Speaker noted that Nongrum had raised the matter in the House without following the proper procedure, as he did not cite a point of order.
The Speaker stated that while Nongrum has the right to raise questions as an elected representative, he should have adhered to the established procedure.
The Speaker invited Nongrum to his chamber to discuss and resolve the matter.
The Speaker stated that shifting Nongrum’s seat might have been an oversight from the Assembly secretariat.
Given that Nongrum is technically still part of the VPP legislature party, the Speaker directed that Nongrum should be allocated his original seat.
