Shillong, Sept 8: Newly elected legislator from Gambegre Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, who is also wife of chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday took her seat in the Assembly during the first day of the autumn session.
“It is a privilege and an honour to be representing my constituency,” Dr Mehtab expressed while speaking to reporters after the session.
As a new member of the Assembly, she stated that she is still learning about the proceedings and operations of the House. She plans to observe and gain experience before actively participating in the Assembly’s activities.
“Well, this time I have a lot to learn. (I will) still see the proceeding and how the house runs so I think I will be observing may be next time for sure,” Dr Mehtab said.
On the topic of women’s representation in politics, she said “Well we have seen that women representation in politics has always been very less and I feel very honoured here today being a woman and being in this august house and I hope that with my present here more and more women will be encouraged to join politics.”
Dr. Mehtab was elected in a by-election held in November last year, securing a significant victory with 12,678 votes and defeating her nearest rival, Sadhiarani Sangma of the Trinamool Congress, by a margin of 4,594 votes.
The Gambegre seat fell vacant after the resignation of Saleng A. Sangma, a three-time legislator, who was elected as the Member of Parliament from Tura constituency.
Dr. Mehtab’s victory marked a significant win for the National People’s Party (NPP), increasing the party’s strength in the Assembly to 32 members.
The women representation has increased to four in the 60-member House.
