SHILLONG, FEB 5: The state cabinet on Thursday approved amendments to the Meghalaya Outstanding Sports Policy and the draft Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsman’s Direct Appointment Service Rules which seeks to benefit sports persons by creating a special cadre for outstanding athletes.
“We have come out with this decision about 6-7 months back and we felt that there were certain amendments… that would go in favor of the sports persons,” Sangma said.
The new rules will allow athletes who win medals in recognized games, such as the Olympics and national games, to be eligible for direct appointment to government posts.
A special cadre will be created for outstanding sports persons, ensuring no disturbance in promotions and other benefits for other departmental staff.
“A special category will be created, a cadre will be created for the outstanding sportsperson… it will discontinue once the person retires,” Sangma added.
The government has also clarified the process for certifying sports persons under the 2% reservation category, with online applications to be made to the sports department.
This will enable eligible athletes to apply for reservation benefits.
