State govt engaging behind the scenes to resolve NEHU impasse: Meghalaya CM

Must read

Shillong, April 8: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday said the state government is engaging at various levels to help find a resolution to the ongoing impasse at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), though it is not directly intervening.

Addressing concerns over the prolonged demand for the Vice Chancellor Prof. P.S. Shukla’s removal, Sangma said, “There are issues from both sides. We have tried to understand those issues, reached out to different stakeholders—either directly or through people in the system—and are trying to find a solution so that NEHU can function smoothly.”

Highlighting the limitations of the state government in such matters, he said, “NEHU is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education. Appointments such as that of the Vice Chancellor are made at the level of the President of India. So, as a state government, it is difficult for us to openly intervene in its day-to-day functioning because established systems are already in place.”

Despite these constraints, the Chief Minister assured that the government is actively engaged behind the scenes. “We’re not directly intervening because we are not the competent authority, but we are engaging. We are talking to people. I have personally gone to meet the students,” he said.

He recalled his attempt to reach out to students in person, though some misunderstood his intentions. “My purpose was engagement. I’m concerned, and I am engaging with students. I’m also in informal contact with some staff and faculty,” he said.

Sangma added that other political leaders and bureaucrats are also involved in efforts to mediate the situation. “We are trying to bring all stakeholders together to find a solution,” he said.

On the role of the Centre, Sangma said, “I’m engaging with the Government of India. I speak with the Hon’ble Education Minister from time to time, updating him and requesting that he explore ways to resolve the issue. They are doing their best.”

He concluded with an appeal for unity, saying, “Yes, there are complications, but we must find a way to come together and resolve this in the larger interest of the students and the youth of the state.”
