Nongpoh, March 4: Office bearers of the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Quinine Nongladaw on Wednesday issued a strong warning to members of the public who are in the habit of littering, discarding liquor bottles, and killing fish by using poisonous substances in the Umran River located within the village jurisdiction.
The VDP of Quinine Nongladaw, led by its President Lansius Syiemlieh along with members comprising youths and women, took the step following repeated complaints about irresponsible behavior by visitors who frequent the riverside for leisure.
Reports alleged that some individuals were indiscriminately dumping waste and engaging in fish poisoning.
Acting on these complaints, the VDP members conducted an inspection of the river and also undertook a cleanliness drive to remove accumulated garbage.
Speaking on the matter, Lansius Syiemlieh expressed serious concern over the actions of certain individuals who continue to behave irresponsibly along the Umran River within the shnong limits.
He said that apart from littering and throwing liquor bottles, some people were also using abusive language in the area and resorting to poisoning the river to kill fish.
Syiemlieh also said that, the VDP decided to carry out the inspection and put up warning notices urging the public to refrain from polluting the river and strictly avoid the use of toxic substances that could lead to the mass killing of aquatic life.
The VDP further announced that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the warnings, as part of efforts to safeguard and protect the Umran River.
