Students lead the charge against plastic pollution in Shillong’s Lumparing

Must read

Shillong, July 25: Over 100 school students took participated in a cleanliness and plastic awareness campaign at the Indoor Sports Stadium in Lumparing on Thursday.

Organised by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) in collaboration with Ka Seng Kynthei Lower Lumparing, the programme aimed to sensitise young minds to the dangers of plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives.

Environmental activist Nicholas J Kharnami, who led the awareness session, urged students to rethink their everyday choices and adopt eco-friendly habits.

He outlined the hazards of single-use plastics and advocated for safer, government-approved alternatives—particularly reusable plastics above 120 microns.

“Small changes in daily behaviour can make a big difference,” said Kharnami, encouraging students to become ambassadors of clean living in their homes and schools.

Arti Lyngdoh, State Project Coordinator for IIE Meghalaya, said the campaign was designed not just to inform but to inspire lasting behavioural shifts. “By targeting schoolchildren, we hope to plant the seeds of change early and empower them to influence their communities,” she said.

The event was part of Swachhata Pakhwada, a fortnight-long campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission, aimed at fostering hygiene, sanitation, and environmental awareness across the country.
