Shillong, May 6: A powerful storm accompanied by strong winds and hail caused havoc across seven districts in the state causing extensive damage to 483 houses strewn across 13 development block areas on Sunday. Fortunately there were no loss of lives.
The storm impacted Baghmara and Chokpot in South Garo Hills, Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Wapung and Saipung in East Jaintia Hills, Thadlaskein and Amlaren in West Jaintia Hills, Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin and Mawshynrut in West Khasi Hills, Mawphlang, Mawkynrew and Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district.
A total of 29 villages involving a population of 949 people bore the brunt of the powerful storm as rain and strong winds brought down thatched houses and any non-concrete structures.
Two schools sustained damage from the storm in Mairang and the roof top of a church was blown away by powerful winds in Wapung, East Jaintia Hills.
The highest number of houses damaged from the accompanying hail storm was reported from Baghmara block in South Garo Hills- 282 houses. The damage was most extensive in Nengkong and Rongchekgre villages.
Several affected families have been relocated to relatives’ homes and dry ration has been provided in East Khasi Hills district.
Relief and distribution of tin sheets for roofing has already begun in East Khasi Hills district, informed the State Disaster Management Authority.
