GNLA mainly operated in Garo Hills part of Meghalaya. It was led by its Chairman Champion R Sangma and Sohan D. Shira as the 'Commander-in-Chief'. The group was formed in 2009 and somewhat disbanded in 2018 after the encounter of Sohan D Shira.
