The state government has made tribe certificate mandatory for areas under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in regards to the issuance of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes certificate in Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, KHADC Deputy Chief Executive member PN Syiem said that the decision was taken at a meeting convened by the KHADC with the members of the different clans and traditional heads following a lot of debate on the Scheduled Tribe issue and the role of the tribal clans.
The State government has revoked an “illegal” order passed at the level of an under secretary in-charge social welfare department by claiming that issuance of Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate to the applicant adopting surnames of either from the father or mother or practice of adopting husband surnames by non-Khasi wife was also allowed.
