DIBRUGARH, March 30: The tea city of Dibrugarh came to a virtual standstill on Monday evening as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led a massive roadshow, underscoring the BJP’s campaign momentum in Upper Assam ahead of the upcoming polls.
Thousands of supporters lined the streets, waving saffron flags and chanting slogans as the Chief Minister’s convoy moved through the town in a high-energy show of strength. The roadshow commenced near the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation office on AT Road, with Sarma standing atop a specially decorated vehicle alongside Prasanta Phukan, a four-time MLA and the BJP’s candidate from the constituency.
The procession wound its way through key thoroughfares, including Red Cross Road, KC Gogoi Road and the bustling Thana Chariali, before culminating at RKB Road. At several points along the route, Sarma paused to greet supporters, many of whom presented him with gamosas.
Addressing the gathering during the roadshow, the Chief Minister spoke of what he described as a strong and enduring bond between Dibrugarh and the BJP, while highlighting Phukan’s long political career and contributions to the constituency’s development.
“The overwhelming response we are witnessing today reflects the people’s faith in our government’s work. Assam has progressed across sectors, and this journey will continue,” Sarma said.
Framing the election as a mandate on governance and development, he emphasised the role of the “double-engine” government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and the BJP government in the state.
The roadshow is expected to further consolidate the BJP’s position in Dibrugarh, considered one of its key strongholds in Upper Assam, as campaigning enters its final phase.
