Dibrugarh, April 2: Tea garden workers across Assam’s Brahmaputra Valley staged an hour-long dharna on Wednesday in support of their 11-point charter of demands.
The protest was organized by the Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) in around 800 registered tea gardens across the valley.
In Tinsukia district, the demonstration took place at Rungagora Tea Estate, where protesting tea garden workers, led by ACMS leaders, demanded a daily wage of ₹500, Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the tea garden community, improved healthcare services, better education, and measures to control rising prices of essential commodities, among other demands.
ACMS has warned that it will intensify its agitation if their demands are not met soon.
“We have submitted several memorandums to tea garden owners and the state government, urging them to increase the minimum wage of tea garden workers to ₹351. The government should understand that the interim wage hike is not permanent,” a protester said.
He added, “We are also pressing for our 11-point charter of demands. The state government has decided to allow five percent of the total tea estate land for tourism and other purposes. If the land is used to build hospitals and schools, we have no objections. However, priority for jobs should be given to the children of tea garden workers.”
