Tura, Dec 3: The third edition of the Me·gong International Literary Festival kicked off on Wednesday at D. C. Park in Tura.
This two day event is organised by the Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus in collaboration with the A•chik Literature Society, Captain Williamson Sangma State University and Don Bosco College.
Celebrated under the theme “Cha•chriko rongrikangbo, Rongjanggiko rongsikangbo,” the festival aimed to honour the cultural legacy of the A•chik community while promoting fresh directions in contemporary literary expression.
The inaugural programme was graced by Sanjay A. Sangma, MLA (Mahendraganj Constituency) and Adviser to the Department of Excise, Government of Meghalaya as the chief guest, where he spoke about the importance of cultural preservation through literature and also shared anecdotes about cultural representation.
He also strongly encouraged authors and budding writers to increase publication efforts and envisioned organizing future literary events on a much larger scale.

He proposed that these expanded events should also involve international, local, and Indian authors, creating a platform for mutual learning and discussion.
Notably, in the event, the A•chik Literature Society also took the opportunity to present a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Titthue Cheran Momin for successfully obtaining the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for all future A-chik/Garo language publications in April 2024.
The ALS credited Dr. Momin for this crucial administrative feat, noting that securing the 13-digit identifier has “far reaching implications” for taking A-chik literature to a “higher level, for their survival and recognition globally.”
This milestone ensures that A-chik literary works can now be systematically cataloged, tracked, and sold on international platforms, granting them the essential professional standing required for global visibility and preservation.
The event also featured the felicitation of three distinguished scholars- Prof. Milton S. Sangma, Prof. Caroline R. Marak and Prof. Fameline K. Marak for their significant contributions to A•chik literature, culture and academia.
The event will also witness the release of major publications: Ku•riping I and Birong Sika by Dr. Dorothy R. Marak, Chokchimsa Bite by Changchang M Sangma, Nikchanga by Sengsime A Sangma, and the official documentation of the Me·gong International Literary Festival (Edition II) by the Department of Garo.
Following the inauguration, the festival hosted a series of literary conversations, in-depth dialogues and a number of engaging discussions involving emerging writers and scholars.
The inaugural day festivities has set the stage for even more engaging sessions and cultural programs for the Tura Me·gong International Literary Festival’s second day on Thursday, December 4.
