Thombor Shiwat re-elected as JHADC CEM for fourth term

‘VPP MDCs lack discipline’, says Dr. Sankey Shangpung

Jowai, Feb 28: The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has elected Dr. Sankey Shangpung as the new Chairman and Thombor Shiwat as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Council.

The election for the Chairman was conducted by West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh. Dr. Sankey Shangpung, an MDC from NPP (Bataw-Lakadong constituency), won with 20 votes, defeating his opponent Rikut Parein, an INC MDC from Saphai-Sahsniang, who secured 6 votes. Additionally, 3 votes were cast under NOTA.

In the CEM election, only 20 MDCs participated, while 8 VPP MDCs remained absent and did not take part in the voting. Former CEM Thombor Shiwat from the NPP won with 17 votes, while 3 MDCs voted for Congress MDC Madonbai Rymbai.

Thombor Shiwat, an MDC for four terms MDC from Moodap-Umladang, has now been elected CEM for the fourth time.

While congratulating the newly elected CEM, Chairman Dr. Sankey Shangpung expressed gratitude to all MDCs who participated in the election. He expressed hope that the 29 MDCs, including five former CEMs, would bring meaningful changes to the Council and the Jaintia Hills region.

However, he criticized the VPP MDCs for boycotting the election, stating that their absence showed a lack of discipline. He urged them to be more responsible and take part in Council proceedings.

It may be noted that only 20 MDCs participated in the CEM election, while the 8 VPP MDCs remained absent without any official notice.
