Imphal, Jan 28: Three personnel of the 33 Assam Rifles died of suspected food poisoning, while two others remain hospitalized at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal
The soldiers were stationed at the Wairoiching foothill, about 25 km from Imphal.
“Five Assam Rifles personnel deployed at the hill post were rushed to RIMS in the early hours of Monday following complaints of chest pain and persistent vomiting. Unfortunately, three of them succumbed, while two are still receiving treatment,” an official confirmed.
The deceased have been identified as Havildar Umesh Kumar Yadav (49) from Bihar, Havildar Phulchand (56) from Uttarakhand, and Havildar Ram Sarkar (47) Uttar Pradesh.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30 am on Monday when the personnel fell ill. Their bodies have been sent to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragedy.
