Shillong, Feb 29: Education Minister, Rakkam Sangma said that the National Testing Agency (NTA) will be establishing three Common University Entrance Test (CUET) centers in Meghalaya, two in Shillong and one in Tura.

The minister said that the Director of NTA has confirmed this to him.

The state had proposed five CUET examination centers for the undergraduate level, however, the NTA said that additional centres will be established only if the volume of students increase.

The CUET examination is scheduled to take place next month.

Expressing concerns on CUET and its impact, the minister said, NEHU Vice Chancellor said that that the university is not filling its seats, as students are not taking up CUET examinations.

“I have been told by the VC of NEHU that lots of seats are vacant”, said the minister.

He said that the establishment of Captain Williamson Sangma State University will reduce the pressure on the students, as they can enrol themselves to colleges affiliated to State University.

The government has further urged the students to appear for CUET for under graduate and post graduate studies in central universities. The minister said that in the past Meghalaya was exempted from the purview of CUET for admission in central universities, particularly NEHU. However, there are not exception this year.
