Shillong, July 14: In a tragic incident on Saturday evening, Rikrak S Sangma, aged 26 and son of Meckenson Ch. Marak, resident of Jolgaongre village of South West Garo Hills (SWGH) fell victim to a wild elephant attack.
The incident occurred during an attempt to drive away a herd of wild elephants that posed a threat to local vegetation.
Upon receiving the distressing report, local authorities promptly reached the scene to conduct an inquiry. Upon arrival, they found the victim’s lifeless body on a bamboo stretcher in the village. It was revealed during the investigation that villagers had managed to recover the deceased from the site of the incident.
Further details uncovered that the victim was working in his forest land when the unfortunate event unfolded.
Around 7 PM to 7:30 PM, as the herd of wild elephants traversed through the village, efforts were made by the villagers to ward them off to protect their agricultural resources. Tragically, during these efforts, the victim was viciously attacked by one of the elephants, leading to his untimely demise.
