Tripura: 4 individuals awarded life imprisonment for murder of bank manager

Agartala, June 3: A court in Tripura on Saturday pronounced life imprisonment to four individuals for the brutal stabbing of a bank manager four years ago.

The West Tripura District and Sessions Court, presided over by Judge Subhasish Sharma Roy, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each convict.

According to reports, the incident occurred on August 3, 2019, when Bodhisatwa Das, the branch manager of United Commercial Bank (UCI) in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district, was fatally stabbed by four assailants.

The attackers were identified as traffic sub-inspector Sukanta Biswas, businessmen Sumit Chowdhury and Sumit Banik, and Omar Sharif alias Shoaib Mia.

Along with the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each perpetrator. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.

The prosecution was led by special public prosecutor Samrat Kar Bhowmik, who revealed that the convicted individuals, namely traffic inspector Sukanta Biswas, Sumit Chowdhury, Sumit Banik, and Omar Sharif alias Shoaib Mia, were charged under Section 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
