Guwahati, Feb 16: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha today called on Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh to discuss key developmental priorities for the state, including advanced weather forecasting, administrative matters, and boosting Tripura’s bamboo industry. The discussions also covered the recently inaugurated Agartala-Akhaura railway link, a crucial step toward strengthening connectivity between India’s Northeast and Bangladesh.
With Tripura experiencing unprecedented heavy rainfall exceeding 500 mm, Chief Minister Saha sought technological assistance to improve weather forecasting and disaster preparedness. Responding to the concern, Dr Jitendra Singh assured that a state-of-the-art weather radar will be installed in Tripura within a year under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The new system—complemented by an existing space research centre in the region—will enhance real-time weather predictions for rainfall and cyclones, improving early warning capabilities and disaster response.
Recognizing Tripura’s vast bamboo reserves, the discussion also focused on harnessing its economic and industrial potential. The Union Minister emphasized that specialized bamboo and biotechnology institutes in Assam (Jorhat) and Manipur will collaborate with the Tripura government to drive research, innovation, and sustainable industrial applications. This initiative aims to generate employment opportunities, boost exports, and promote eco-friendly industries in the state.
The Chief Minister also raised key administrative concerns, including the placement of bureaucrats and officers in the state. The Union Minister acknowledged these concerns and assured discussions with the relevant authorities.
The meeting also underscored the importance of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link, a project Dr Jitendra Singh had actively supported during his tenure as Minister for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER). The 12.24 km corridor—with 5.46 km in Tripura and 6.78 km in Bangladesh—reconnects historic trade routes and enhances economic prospects for Tripura and the Northeast by providing a faster transit option to Bangladesh’s ports and international markets.
This strategic railway link is expected to facilitate smoother trade, improve people-to-people ties, and strengthen India-Bangladesh relations while unlocking new economic opportunities for Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
