Agartala, Dec 27: Tripura CPI(M) has come down heavily at ruling BJP and main opposition Tipra Motha and said that both are trying to frustrate people’s democratic aspirations and progress. The Left party clearly said that they would strengthen their fight against BJP and those “trying to divide people by raising separatist demands”.

Talking to reporters, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said, “Poor people were submerged in poverty, starvation, prejudices during the royal regime of erstwhile princely Tripura. The feudal kinds of Manikya dynasty deprived these people in all terms and were enjoying in Ujjayanta Palace and Neermahal. A fight to overcome imperialism was going on throughout the world at that time. A group of youths led by Dasharath Debbarma, Sudhanya Debbarma, Hemanta Debbarma, Dr. Nilmani Debbarma, just 11 of them, decided to start Jana Siksha Andolan at Durga Choumuhani Para, close to Agartala city, on this day.”

Paying respects to the public education movement, Chaudhury said the day is being observed as Janasiksha Diwas since the last 78 years.

“The democratic aspirations, Constitutional systems, traditions etc are razed in India under the BJP rule,” he said and criticised the opposition TIPRA Motha party for allegedly maintaining “tacit understanding and strategic standing” with the saffron party owing to which he said BJP returned to power despite having only 39 percent votes by itself.

“It was not a fight against any community or religion. It was for spread of education and enlightenment among people. Many schools were started against browbeating of monarchs. The Gana Mukti Parishad was formed from that consciousness in 1948. Jana Siksha Andolan laid the foundation for a strong democracy in Tripura, following which over seven decades of people’s democratic movement and Left political movement started,” he said.
