Agartala, Aug 28: The Twipra Students Federation (TSF), tribal students’ organisation in Tripura, has called for a 12-hour statewide bandh on Monday demanding the introduction of Kokborok in Roman script and passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
Hundreds of agitators of the TWIPRA Student’s Federation (TSF) were detained at several spots, including in the capital, Agartala. The agitators had blocked roads in support of a strike on Monday across the state, which was called by them in protest against the state government’s unwilling attitude towards fulfilling their long-pending demand for the declaration of Roman script as the official script for the tribal language Kokborok.
The TSF has called for a state-wide strike and noted that for the last 50 years, the TSF has been raising this demand, but no government has resolved the issue.
The powerful tribal students organisation has alleged that two months ago the leaders of TSF met and submitted a memorandum to Tripura Governor S N Arya for implementing Roman script for Kokborok language and also met Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on the issue, but it seems that the government is unwilling to resolve the issue as it is negligent towards the tribals, and so there is no other option but to go for a state-wide strike in protest.
They also demanded that the Union government raise the 125th Amendment Bill in Parliament immediately.
