Tura Traffic team lift SP’s Champions Trophy in West Garo Hills

Tura, May 12: The West Garo Hills SP’s Champions Trophy cricket tournament came to a conclusion on Sunday with Tura Traffic team defeating Tura PS team by 19 runs at the Police Parade Ground in Tura on Sunday.

The tourney, organised by the office of the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills saw enthusiastic participation from 24 police teams comprised entirely of police personnel.

Starting from May 7, this five day tourney aimed to promote physical activity among the often-duty-bound police force, providing a refreshing break and encouraging a healthier lifestyle. Beyond physical well-being, the initiative also aimed to strengthen camaraderie among team members and cultivate a positive rapport with the local community.

After a series of spirited matches, the final showdown pitted the Tura PS team against the Tura Traffic team. Batting first, Tura Traffic team set a target of 90 runs (scoring 89) with a loss of 9 wickets in their full quota of 15 overs. Chasing a target of 90 runs to win the final, the Tura PS team faced an early setback, losing 2 wickets without scoring in the first over, putting their team under pressure. Nikrak Marak of the Tura Traffic, further intensified the pressure on the Tura PS team, taking 2 quick wickets in the third over.

Despite losing wickets quickly, Meghnath Marak of the Tura PS team hit two sixes and two fours, scoring a valuable 20 runs for his team. However, the entire Tura PS team was eventually bowled out for 70 runs in the 13th over. In a hard-fought contest, the Tura Traffic Branch emerged victorious, claiming the championship title.

Speaking to Hub News, Priyanka W. Sangma expressed optimism for future, larger-scale competitions, potentially expanding to a range-level tournament, underscoring the commitment of the West Garo Hills Police to the well-being of their personnel and their engagement with the community.

Gracing the finale event was J.F.K. Marak, DIG Western Range as the chief guest, along with guest of honor Abraham T. Sangma, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Priyanka W. Sangma, Addl. SP, West Garo Hills, Bitching N. Marak, CI (Sadar), and other officials, distributing trophies, medals, and certificates to the winning and runner-up teams.

Maradona Sangma of Tura PS team received both Best Batsman and Man of the Series award, while Nikrak Marak of Tura Traffic team was awarded Best Bowler and Man of the Match title.
