The event witnessed distinguished guests with Meghalaya Speaker Thomas A. Sangma gracing the occasion as the Special Guest and Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma as the Guest of Honour.

Established on August 24, 1993, Durama College emerged as a visionary endeavor by the senior citizens of Tura, who recognized the need for accessible higher education in the heart of Garo Hills. The college began its journey from the premises of Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Tura, as a co-educational institution.

He stated that the institution was an incubator of talent that has nurtured countless individuals across diverse fields over the past three decades, particularly within the Garo Hills region.

The Minister further made a special note of the contribution of the founding Principal of the college, I. K. Sangma, who couldn’t be present in person, remarking that his vision, dedication and hard work has brought benefits to many families and children.

“As we commemorate this significant milestone, let each one of us pledge to carry forward the legacy of this college with a sense of pride and unwavering dedication. Together, let’s endeavor to fortify and amplify the impact of this institution in the years ahead,” emphasized Meghalaya Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, during his address.

He further disclosed that he and the Education Minister have already initiated discussions with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma regarding the transformation of the college into a ‘People’s College’. The Chief Minister has assured to examine this demand.

Since its inception, the College has been administered by a governing body constituted in accordance with the norms and guidelines laid down by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) comprising of academicians, administrators and senior citizens of Garo Hills. Despite the constraints of both time and space due to which the College could only conduct morning classes in its early days, yet, this unique schedule proved to be a boon, affording many the opportunity to partake in educational pursuits prior to their usual office hours.

In 2009, the College shifted to its permanent campus at Megonggre, Rongkhon, on a sprawling area of 72 bighas, set amidst a peaceful environment ideal for higher education.
